Description
This is an original Allgemeine SS officer’s tunic with the left collar tab marked “51” and the right tab bearing three pips identifies the wearer as an SS-Hauptsturmführer (equivalent to a captain) assigned to the 51st SS-Standarte. The Cuff Title SS-Abschnitt “III” Sturmbann, is hand-embroidered silver-aluminium along with the silver edge piping.
Here is a breakdown of the insignia:
- Rank: The right collar patch shows the rank insignia. For an Allgemeine SS officer, three pips indicated the rank of Hauptsturmführer.
- Unit Designation: The left collar patch indicates the officer’s unit. The number “51” identifies the 51st SS-Standarte (standard or regiment), which was part of the Allgemeine SS organization. The “51” is hand-embroidered silver-aluminium along with the silver edge piping. The embroidery of the Runes and ’51’ of particularly high-quality workmanship. Both collar patches beautifully tailor machine-sewn into place. The companion rank patch with three silver-aluminium pips on black, along with silver edge piping.
- Uniform: The uniform is a black Allgemeine SS tunic, most commonly the black M32 uniform, worn by officers during the pre-war period and for ceremonial occasions during World War II.
- The Allgemeine SS was the first branch of the SS. Units were designated by numbers, and officers of the regiment wore their unit’s number on the left collar patch instead of the SS runes.

Historical Context: This tunic belonged to an SS officer who was part of the paramilitary structure that consolidated the Nazi regime’s power during the pre-war years. The Allgemeine SS, unlike the later Waffen-SS, was primarily a political organization.
Time Period: The black service uniform with this configuration of insignia was typical of the Allgemeine SS during the pre-war and early-war periods. Later in the war, insignia and uniform regulations, particularly for the Waffen-SS, changed significantly.
Rarity: Original SS uniforms and insignia are considered rare and highly collectible historical artifacts. It is important to note that such items are collected for historical purposes and should not be used to glorify or support Nazi ideology.
