History
Historians and collectors alike can appreciate the iconic PPS43 submachine gun. Developed by Soviet firearms designer Alexey Sudayev, the PPS43 was created as a compact weapon for reconnaissance and personal defense in close combat situations. Submachine guns have played a pivotal role in military history for over a century, initially emerging during World War I as effective trench warfare weapons. After both World Wars, SMGs became prevalent worldwide, with the PPS43 standing out as a significant design. Nearly two million units were produced, many of which found their way into post-war conflicts. The submachine gun’s rise to prominence can be traced back to 1918 when John T. Thompson invented the Thompson submachine gun, which gained notoriety during America’s Prohibition era. Infamous for its use by gangsters, the Thompson prompted the passage of the National Firearms Act of 1934, mandating the registration of fully automatic weapons. In this global context, Sudayev’s PPS43 emerged as a standout design. Introduced as a follow-up to the Soviet PPSh-41 during World War II, the PPS-43 was considered a superior weapon due to its simplified production process. Unlike the PPSh-41’s 70-round drum magazine, the PPS-43 utilized a more efficient 35-round stick magazine. Production of the PPS-43 began in 1942, with full-scale manufacturing commencing in 1943. Designed to be mass produced quickly, its components were primarily made from stamped sheet steel, significantly reducing machining time. The Red Army utilized the PPS-43 extensively until the end of the war, and by 1946, nearly two million units had been produced. Following the war, the PPS-43 design was adopted by several Warsaw Pact nations and spread to countries in Africa and Asia, further solidifying its place in military history. Sudayev’s submachine gun became a symbol of Soviet engineering, demonstrating how a simple yet effective weapon could influence conflicts worldwide.
