While battle rifle triggers are notoriously heavy, the surplus pack on my CA-3 breaks cleanly right at 7.5 pounds after a short stage. It has a very positive, mechanical reset that makes rapid firing strings on steel torso targets highly predictable and fun.
ELKCHSR –
Make no mistake, it’s still a stout battle rifle, but the classic roller-delayed blowback system behaves beautifully. It flattens out the recoil impulse noticeably compared to an AR-10, making rapid target strings smooth and incredibly satisfying.

this is a solid chunk of Cold War steel.

This rifle launches empty brass like a rocket launcher

I took this out for a massive weekend range session to break it in. Running a mix of commercial brass and cheap steel-cased ammo, the fluted chamber performed flawlessly. It rips cases out with insane authority, leaving zero stuck hulls or cycling hesitations behind.

I stayed away from early Century clones for years, but hearing that PTR actually builds these CA-3 units won me over. The receiver stamps are dead-on, the welds are clean, and the bolt gap is perfectly within spec right out of the box.

The rifle arrived at my local FFL dealer in tact!! I love iiiitttt!!!!

The surplus stock layout is completely true to factory dimensions. I popped off the thin plastic buttplate and slid a standard surplus HK heavy rubber pad straight onto the metal tracking rails. It snapped in securely, adding a bit of length and extra recoil cushion.
ELKCHSR –
Building or buying a roller-delayed platform is an investment, and you shouldn’t cheap out on the core mechanics. This replacement layout is incredibly robust, highly accurate, and durable enough to outlast thousands of rounds. It is easily the finest value battle rifle on the market today.
Bambistew –
The old C308 push-button releases were awful to reach, but this true G3 setup with the paddle release is incredibly ergonomic. Magazines snap in with a crisp mechanical click and drop free instantly. It’s exactly how a battle rifle should be.
Pierce Bellemare –
A massive detail that often gets shaved off modern clones is the front barrel assembly configuration. The bayonet adapter plug sits perfectly under the triple frame sight tower. I slipped a surplus German G3 contract bayonet onto the sleeve and it locked up tight.
Dinkshooter –
The assembly tolerances are fantastic. The two stock pins push out with firm finger pressure without requiring a hammer and punch. The bolt carrier group slides out of the receiver tube smoothly, making standard carbon cleanup after a 200-round range trip incredibly easy.
MTGomer –
The new charging handle and tube layout from PTR track smoothly without any grit. Pulling the handle back into the structural notch feels solid, and executing the iconic ‘HK slap’ to load the chamber functions flawlessly every single time.
Garrett Coady –
The rifle is fully compatible with standard surplus HK91 and G3 furniture. I easily swapped out the narrow green handguard for a wide black model using the simple one-pin takedown design. It is an exceptionally modular weekend project gun.

The FFL transfer process was completely smooth.
Forky finder –
I’ve fed this rifle a steady diet of cheap surplus M80 ball ammo and steel-cased target loads. The heavy-duty hammer spring hits the primers with massive energy, resulting in 100% reliable ignition with absolutely zero light strikes or failure-to-fire errors.

I’ve wanted a true battle rifle in my collection for decades, but original imports are completely out of reach. The CA-3 completely scratches that itch. The combination of authentic Portuguese military parts kits and a crisp, modern PTR receiver makes it look, feel, and shoot exactly like a high-end heirloom.

I love that they didn’t weld a permanent modern Picatinny rail to the top. The receiver keeps the traditional mounting notches intact. I slipped a standard MFI claw mount over the receiver bulges and it locked down perfectly level.

The rotary drum rear sight assembly is in excellent functional shape. It locks into the 100, 200, 300, and 400-meter detent notches with a sharp, positive click. Once zeroed, dialing for distance on the fly at the outdoor range is completely foolproof.

The OD green furniture arrived with some honest field scuffs and storage wear that give it an amazing, authentic Cold War vibe. The internal steel parts were clean, perfectly functional, and completely free of deep corrosion. A true shooter’s history piece.
