History
The SVT-40 (Samozaryadnaya Vintovka Tokareva 1940) is a semi-automatic battle rifle developed by Soviet firearms designer Fedor Tokarev, chambered in 7.62x54mmR. This rifle was part of the USSR’s effort to modernize its infantry arsenal during the early stages of World War II.
Replacing the earlier SVT-38, the SVT-40 was lighter, more reliable, and better suited to the harsh Eastern Front conditions. It was widely issued in 1940 and played a significant role during the early years of the war. While eventually overshadowed by the simpler Mosin-Nagant and later the SKS, the SVT-40 remains one of the most advanced semi-automatic rifles of its time.
