History
This is an exceptional and rare complete set from the early years of the Third Reich era — an original WW2 German M24 Stick Grenade metal transport case, dated 1935, complete with five original Stielhandgranaten (“stick grenades”). This pre-war manufactured case and grenade set exemplifies early German rearmament efforts and represents one of the more iconic and visually striking pieces of German infantry equipment from World War II.
Transport Case Details:
- Constructed of heavy-gauge steel with original field-grey paint, exhibiting typical wartime wear and patina consistent with age and service.
- The lid retains its hinged locking latches and carry handle, all in functional condition.
- Stenciled or embossed markings on the exterior may include “Vor Gebrauch Sprengkapsel einsetzen” (“Insert detonator before use”), a warning found on early war-dated cases.
- Clearly stamped with a 1935 date, showing this is a Wehrmacht rearmament-period issue, pre-dating the outbreak of full-scale war.
Stick Grenades – M24 Stielhandgranaten:
- Includes Four authentic M24 grenades, known colloquially as the “potato masher” due to their distinctive design.
- Each grenade features a wooden shaft with screw-on metal head, correct for the M24 variant.
- Original manufacturer markings, waffenamts, and wartime codes may be present on metal fittings and wood shafts, depending on condition.
- Most retain remnants of original finish and printed text, such as explosive type designation and delay fuse indicators.
- Fuzes and charge contents are deactivated to legal standards; grenades are fully inert and safe for display.
Historical Context:
The M24 Stick Grenade was the standard-issue German hand grenade throughout World War II. Designed for easy throwing with greater leverage and range, it was a staple of German infantry assault equipment. Transport cases like this one were issued to frontline units and contained multiple grenades for squad use. Early examples dated in the mid-1930s, like this one, are particularly rare, having been manufactured during Germany’s secretive rearmament phase before the war officially began.
